Views of Music in the Liturgy
The dean finds several purposes for music in Anglican liturgyânamely, to lift the spirit of the worshiping congregation, to offer prayer through song, to enrich the liturgy itself, and to serve as a vehicle for the words of the hymns and the anthems. He considers the anthem to be a second sermon. While he believes music in liturgy should be a gift to both God and the people, he thinks it also should offer an opportunity for the people to express themselves: "That's why I think hymns are so vitally important. They are not 'fill-ins,' but rather an opportunity for the people to express their faith, hopes, and aspirations, to give glory to God, and to petition God."
He also reflects on the additional gift of music that the choir school brings to the congregation. He sees the school as providing a way for the children and young people to enter into the liturgy, not just as participants but as leaders. They are critical to the entire liturgical event. "It's not as if the children come in once a week and practice and every fourth Sunday they sing a little anthem on the chancel steps. Here, it's Sunday after Sunday after Sunday. They are integrally involved in the worshiping life of this congregation." He sees them as ministers among and to the congregation.
The musician points to the formative function of participating in the music of liturgy, particularly for the children in the choir school. He cites the spiritual formation that takes place through the singing of psalms every Sunday or hearing the stories and music of the Easter Vigil, for example. And the children stay involved even after they graduate. Some come to worship in the summer when their parents don't come. Week after week they experience the liturgy and the sermon and sense they have become a part of the church community.
